It then creates a profile list you can choose from in the print dialog. Your printing software looks in that folder when it comes time to print. The process of "installing" an ICC color profile is nothing more than pasting (or drag and drop) into a specific folder in the operating system. Speaking 'softproofing', I think I need to do more of that on my posts - just seen terrible typos in my last comment - sorry to all readers.Mac OSX User? Click here for instructions My printer (which will also print more colours than that of sRBG) will print more tones from a photo which has been assigned to prophoto (or to use your example, has been embedded with a prophoto colour space) although there may be some colours also within the prophoto colour space that the printer is not capable of printing. Since the camera has a huge gamut of colours, I see some logic in using the widest gamut colour space with soft-proofing on when editing in software Therefore it doesn't matter whether you set in-camera settings to sRGB or aRGB as you are dealing with the raw data. I understand what you say regarding embedding the colour profile within the image so that any icc-aware software will read the colours faithfully to that colour space, but one advantage of using RAW is that you can put it into any colour space you choose after the shot - you just have to have them available. With the exception of certain monitors with internal LUT's, I don't know of any input or output devices that operate with exactly one of the standard color spaces. In any case, I don't understand why anybody would want a copy of the profile file for any of the standard color spaces.

Available working spaces are a function of the programming of the editing program, not of which profiles are available on the computer. If an editing program (like Elements 7) doesn't have the ability to use a certain color space as a working space (see Dominic's comment above), then just getting the profile for that space doesn't help at all.

There seems to be some misunderstanding here. PS is then able to use the installed profile just fine because it is capable of using any profile as a working space. In my case for example I don't have prophoto by default in CS4, but I downloaded it at some point and installed it to the system profiles.
